The decision for home schooling was based on a number of factors: desire to teach religion as part of the curriculum, undesireable school conditions, and overall dissatisfaction with the school’s curriculum.

Although it’s difficult for researchers to gather data on home schools, some research indicates that adults who were home schooled have a higher college attendance rate and seem more satisfied with life in general.

Home schooled children have consistently scored exceptionally higher than average on achievement tests. I recently read that home schooled 3rd graders scored higher than 81% of public school students in math alone!

www.SuccessfulHomeSchool.info

The biggest benefit to home schooling is simply that parents love their kids and want them to have a bright future. Teachers care very much about their students but no one loves their kid like a mom or dad.

Often the home school parents are able to spend significantly more money on educational materials than a public school can. The average cost of supplies per student per year can range from $200-$2000 at a home school.

Home school students can progress through educational material at the student’s rate. This makes it much easier for home school students to be enrolled one or more grades above their public and private school-age peers.

Home schooled children are healthier than public school kids since they aren’t exposed to so many sick children.

Home schooled children don’t deal with so much peer pressure.

Home schooled children often develop exceptional relationships with their siblings.

Parents can offer their children instruction in areas that aren’t fostered in public schools. The curriculum is flexible and can be ever changing.

The schedule can be changed if a child needs more or less help in a particular subject.

One mom told me that she is able to take her children to the museum for art class, the symphony for music, and ice skating for physical ed. She wants her children to socialize with other children their age so she often incorporates other home schools into her field trips.

If you’re considering home schooling your child, where do you begin?

There are great resources available for parents who are already home schooling and for those who are just kicking the idea around. Starting a home school can be overwhelming. The parents I interviewed said that it is well worth the sacrifice.

I was referrred to this resource and I agree that it’s great:

Today we all know that education is must for everyone but are afraid about the safety of our children due to the increasing number of crimes in Michigan. Michigan Homeschooling may be the most promising way to give our children a higher level of education while mitigating worries about safety. As the name implies, with homeschooling programs you may educate your child within an atmosphere that addresses special learning opportunities available in Michigan. Homeschooling may also offer a self paced study schedule in which the student isn’t forced into their classmates’ pace, required to submit coursework on arbitrary deadlines or complete final examinations. Though powerful vested interests oppose homeschooling, it is also true that parents see the benefits of homeschooling a child. There are obvious reasons that make homeschooling the best way to teach the values that most parents believe and hold true in Michigan.

Homeschooling provides the best education in moral and religious beliefs for children. Instead of having alternative forms of sexuality thrust upon them by the state-mandated curriculum at the age of seven, parents can introduce these concepts at an age that is more appropriate for the child. When deciding to educate their child, a big decision and one of the keys concerns that comes to every parent’s mind is whether or not he or she has the ability and knowledge to be a teacher and do the job correctly. But in Michigan, homeschooling parents have the support of over 100,000 other families and over 1,000 support groups and networks that have been set up to assure that parents are successful. In addition, the internet has changed the face of Michigan and homeschooling forever by offering virtual tours, online distance learning programs, educational games and activities that make the Michigan homeschooling dynamic. Instead of having to settle for the curriculum promoted by lobbyists and special interests homeschoolers may choose from the best and brightest instructional methods in America – or the world for that matter.

Homeschool programs give children more focused education and more individual attention than a school, providing alternative academic time and support through online systems. Furthermore, the Internet can assist busy parents too as children have an entire online library available at their fingertips. In fact, due to the advances technology there are more tools available than ever to assist parents in the task of providing homeschool education for their children. For those students who live in rural areas, homeschooling is best at providing an efficient learning environment. Riding a bus for an hour each direction is more a waste of time than anything else. Therefore those students who are homeschooled often have better computer skills than their public school peers. Another benefit that makes homeschooling better than a public school is that it is difficult for a teacher to rotate 25 to 30 students through the use of classroom computers in any timely manner. So now if you are in any confusion about Michigan homeschooling environment, just consider all the benefits that a homeschool program offers parents and their children as well.

One of the benefits of online homeschooling is that homeschoolers have the flexibility to pursue their passions and still accumulate instructional time for those offline activities. Watch this brief video sponsored by the leading private online Christian schoool for K-12 students, www.TheMorningStarAcademy.org
Help answer the question about homeschooling benefits
For parents that home-school their kids: What are the benefits from homeschooling vs public or private?
I'm strongly considering home-schooling my child. What benefits are there vs public or private schooling? Do you find that you have better control of your kids (discipline wise)? Do you find that your kids have better manners?

Home schooling permits you, as fogeys, to teach your children the courses that may fit their desires and abilities. In many cases you will be able to give your youngster an education that’s far above and beyond what they can learn in a public college.

Each state has laws and statutes that govern home schooling.

it’s important to understand that laws applying to home schooling are established to guard your child. There should be laws in place to be sure a child isn’t just staying at home and not going to college, but they are actually being educated. Attending college is a legal requirement in each state.

you will need to know exactly what your individual country’s laws are on home schooling. Apart from that, every state has home faculty associations that will help you get a better understanding of the laws. You’ll also have a better experience of your rights as folks regarding home schooling. Again, every state is dissimilar in their testing procedures and necessities so you will need to get yourself up to speed with these.

this may seem pretty complicated to some, but it truly isn’t tricky in the long run. It just takes a little time to read up on the rules and then fill everything out properly.

Homeschooling is a special type of education, a do it yourself education, if you will. So, if it is a do it yourself education, just who is the “you?” Parents have hectic lives with work and other pursuits that benefit their children and family. It is somewhat of a challenge for many parents, particularly single parents, to find the time to devote to giving their children a full time education. So, what is the answer?

There I good news. Parents have a wide variety of homeschooling options. More than a million children are home schooled every year so it is obvious that parents are finding ways to make it work for them and their families. Those ways are as diverse as the parents themselves.

Often, in the case of a traditional, two parent family, they have an arrangement where one parent works outside of the home and the other works in the home. The one who works in the home also assumes the primary responsibility for homeschooling the children.

Many parents choose homeschooling for their children because they are dissatisfied with the quality of education as well as the values that are taught, implicitly or otherwise, in public schools.

However such traditional arrangements, one parent, usually the man, works, the other, usually the woman, cares for the home, is not the only option and certainly not the only choice that parents can make. The options have expanded exponentially since the 1960s. With the introduction of role reversals, same sex couples, extended families and many other less conventional families are emerging; alternatives in homeschooling education are presenting many more choices.

Many families, regardless of family structure, are making creative choices in selecting someone to educate their children. Some may invite an older relative or a friend into the home. This is an arrangement that actually goes back to a much older tradition. Whether it is an older aunt or uncle, a grandparent or a friend, that person can bring to the table valuable experiences and can often be exceptional homeschool education providers.

As the homeschooling movement has come to a point where second generation education is possible, children who were homeschooled are often homeschooling their own children. They are also often the best choices in providing homeschool education.

On the other hand, those who endured public school education also have many valuable contributions. They have many valuable life lessons to impart but they should take care to avoid falling back on public school methods.

Neighbors can provide homeschooling as can stay at home moms. These moms provide childcare services as well as incorporating homeschooling. Another option is to find a family who is already homeschooling their own children and have them take on your children as well.

Busy parents also have a somewhat newer facet to homeschooling but is centuries old and that is finding a tutor. In many other countries, tutors are often the primary education giver. In fact, the public school system which is modeled after the Prussian system of the 1800s is a relatively recent endeavor which has, for the most part, failed.

Tutors come is all varieties with a wide range of backgrounds. Some may specialize in a certain area such as music or languages while others have a broad background. Some are even former public or private school teachers who were unhappy with the system, yet love teaching.

Parents often mistakenly believe that they can not afford a private tutor to homeschool their children. However, they soon realize after research that this is simply not so. The cost of a tutor is somewhat nominal when the quality of the education is considered. They may even elect to start a home based business so that they can still be a part of their children’s lives while the tutor carries the bulk of the educational load.

Often parents will discover that children who are fairly motivated and independent thrive well in a homeschooling environment and the time required for schooling is actually less than anticipated. When a parent or tutor provides a child with guidance and resources the children largely teach themselves. This in itself makes tutoring far less expensive. One of the greatest benefits of homeschooling is that homeschooled children are usually at the top of their classes in college because their love for learning is self generated.

Before discounting homeschooling as a venture that will not work for you, take some time to explore all of your options.

What is the benefit of these vs. just teaching out of books?
I guess what I'm asking is why pay $1000/year for, say, A beka curriculum if you can get second-hand books and videos, etc. and teach your kids the same info.

Children often say they don’t like school, but you might not ever hear your children make that statement if you homeschool. Homeschooling has many benefits over sending your child to public school. Besides being able to attend school in your pajamas, your child will have much more freedom to learn than their public school counterparts will have.

One of the things that can make homeschooling fun for children is the ability to take multiple field trips throughout the year. Whereas most public school students are lucky to take one field trip a year, if they even get to take that, homeschool students have the freedom to go on as many as their parent or support group can plan.

Field trip possibilities are endless, limited only to by the imagination of the planner, and funds you’re willing to see leave your wallet. Some common field trips are museums, zoos, and botanical gardens. Did you know you can also make a field trip out of a trip to a Krispy Kreme Donut store? Yep, you sure can. You can also visit police departments, fire departments, and local newspapers. In fact, if you can find someone willing to allow it, you can make a field trip out of almost any business you can think of.

Besides taking several field trips a year, another thing that makes homeschooling fun for kids is the ability to learn what interests them and in a way that suits their learning style. While they will still have to learn the basics of reading, writing, and mathematics, they may choose to concentrate on robots, dinosaurs, or some composer or artist. And one of the benefits of homeschooling is that you can combine coursework into Unit Studies that enable the student to cover the basics all while concentrating on that one subject.

It seems that art and music are all but missing from public schools as educational budgets are slashed each year. If you homeschool, and your child likes either art or music, you can spend as much time on those subjects as you’d like. In fact, you can combine art and music appreciation with many other subjects. Allow your child to try something they’ve never done before. You have that option if you homeschool, and you don’t have to get permission from the principal to do so.

Many children learn best by handling items, whether math manipulatives, building blocks, or cooking utensils. If you homeschool, you can allow your child to use those manipulatives if doing so will help them to learn. In public schools, children’s learning styles often aren’t taken into consideration since teachers have to teach to a whole group and can’t address students individually. By allowing your child to learn in the way that is easiest for them, homeschooling will be much more fun for them.

While it’s unlikely that your homeschooled children will say they “love” school, there are things that you can do to help them enjoy it more. By allowing them to learn to their strengths, concentrating on subjects that interest them, and taking them on field trips, your child will enjoy going to “school” much better.

Caleen is the tribal and spiritual leader of the Winnemem Wintu tribe, as well as a Global Village School parent and board member. She discusses how homeschooling has enabled several children from the Wintu tribe to express their tribal values, carry on their spiritual traditions (songs, ceremonies, visiting and protecting sacred places, etc.) and prepare them for life as …
Help answer the question about homeschooling benefits
Question about North Carolina high school homeschooling?
I would like to start home schooling in the fall; I'll be starting my junior year. My main question is:

Will I have required courses?

One of the reasons I would like to try homeschool is to get the benefit of choosing my own classes. I'm aware that I'll have to take the state tests, but is there a requirement on the other courses I have to take?
One more question:
Is it possible for me to make up my own course?
